Penile Frenulectomy

The frenulum of the penis is the elastic fold of the skin that joins the underside of the glans with the inner surface of the foreskin. Its function is to help the foreskin to contract over the glans. When the frenulum is tight or short, this is called Frenulum Breve. This can exist in both circumcised and uncircumcised men.

The degree of tightness and thickness of the frenulum varies from men to men, and sometimes can be so severe that it tugs on the glans and causes a downward curve during an erection. The frenulum may rip and tear during vigorous activities such as sex, resulting in pain and bleeding which in turn causes many men to lose their erections. Men may go through their entire lives suffering from pain and bleeding unaware that there is a cure. Frenulum breve can sometimes also contribute to Premature Ejaculation.

Frenulum Breve can be treated by undergoing a Frenulectomy procedure. Under local anaesthesia, the frenulum is cut, creating an open wound which is then closed with sutures. The sutures are removed at a follow up appointment 1 week later. Most patients recover quickly without any complications. The end result is increased range of motion in the penile skin and enhanced sexual enjoyment.
